How Many Driving Lessons Do I Need Before My Road Test?

Alberta's minimum, the packages that build on it, and how to tell when you are ready.

"How many driving lessons do I need?" has no single answer, but Alberta gives a clear starting point. The right number depends on your licence, your experience and how often you practise between lessons. This guide takes each part in turn.

Alberta's starting point

Alberta sets out what a Class 5 driver training program includes. Every new driver needs at least 15 hours of classroom instruction. The in-car part depends on the licence you hold:

  • Class 7 learners and Class 5-GDL drivers. 10 hours of in-vehicle instruction.
  • Full Class 5 (non-GDL) drivers. A minimum of 6 hours in the vehicle.

Students also pass knowledge and practical assessments. On our courses, the pass marks are 80% in the classroom course and 75% in the driving lessons. A student below 75% may need at least 2 more hours.

These hours are the minimum for the certificate. They are not a limit on how much practice you can have. Alberta also notes that finishing a program may help you get vehicle insurance at a reduced rate.

You have time to plan, too. You must hold your Class 7 for at least one year before the Class 5 road test.

Omni's packages: 10 or 14 hours

Our Full Course pairs 15 hours of theory with 10 or 14 hours of one-on-one driving. You choose classroom theory or online theory when you book. Zone A prices are below. All prices plus 5% GST.

  • Standard Course, 10 hours of driving. $495 with classroom theory, or $545 online. This meets the certificate minimum.
  • More Road Time, 14 hours of driving. $680 with classroom theory, or $735 online. You get more time for highways, parking and traffic circles.

Zone A covers Edmonton and Beaumont. In Zone B, which is St. Albert, Sherwood Park and Leduc, the Standard Course is $600 or $650, and More Road Time is $820 or $870. Need still more practice after either one? Add Brush-Up Lessons by the hour.

What changes the number for you

Two learners with the same licence can need very different amounts of time. These points make the biggest difference:

  • Your starting point. Someone who has never sat behind the wheel needs more time than someone with months of supervised practice.
  • Practice between lessons. Regular drives with your supervisor turn what you learn in each lesson into habits.
  • Nerves. Anxious drivers often need a little longer, and that is fine. Our instructors are patient with beginners and nervous drivers.
  • Spacing. Lessons spread evenly over a few months tend to stick. All driving hours are to be finished within 6 months of registration.
  • Your goal. Passing the road test is one goal. Feeling safe on a highway in winter is another.

Signs you are ready for the road test

To answer "how many driving lessons do I need?", count skills, not hours. You are close when you can do these without prompts:

  • Run the pre-drive routine and your mirror and shoulder checks every time.
  • Keep smooth control in steady traffic.
  • Change lanes safely, with a shoulder check before each move.
  • Handle traffic circles and intersections, knowing who has the right-of-way.
  • Park all three ways: perpendicular, parallel, and uphill or downhill.
  • Drive a full lesson with only a few small corrections from your instructor.

If one skill still feels shaky close to your test, a short top-up often does more than a whole new package.

Already licensed?

If you already drive, you may need far fewer hours.

  • Drivers working toward a non-GDL Class 5 licence. Our Alberta Licence Upgrade gives you 6 hours with a certified instructor. It costs $350 for the Classroom option or $400 for the Online option, in every area.
  • Rusty or nervous drivers. The Winter Brush-Up 2hrs gives you two hours in the car for $100.
  • One skill at a time. Hourly lessons are $50 an hour, in all five areas.

So, how many driving lessons do I need?

Here is a simple way to decide:

  • You practise often and feel steady. Ten hours may be enough.
  • You practise now and then, or you feel nervous. Fourteen hours gives you more room.
  • You are starting from zero with little supervised practice. Take More Road Time, then add hourly lessons if you need them.
  • You are near your test but one skill needs work. Add a Brush-Up Lesson or two.

Whatever you choose, give 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel a lesson, or a fee applies.

Common questions

Is 10 hours of driving enough to pass?

Ten hours meets the certificate minimum. Whether it is enough for you depends on your supervised practice between lessons. Plenty of practice drives make 10 hours go much further.

Can I add more hours later?

Yes. A Brush-Up Lesson, booked by the hour, or the Winter Brush-Up 2hrs can add time in the car before your test.

Do the theory hours count as driving lessons?

No. The 15 hours of theory are separate from your driving hours. You finish the theory before your in-car lessons start.
